I finished reading the book Girls to the Front: The True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution this morning on the #7 bus en-route to work . I had excitedly checked it out from the Library musing on a time when I had started mail ordering zines and records from independent resources during my teenage years. My teenage years were spent in the lonesome blasted glass of West Texas, which seemed like a cultural wasteland. I look back on my years in West Texas and I think I was a lot luckier than I thought. I networked with a group of friends, played music, used local retail chains to procure independent releases, and I had a car to get out of dodge to see cool shows in Lubbock, only an hour and a half away from where I lived. That’s not something that a lot of kids in other cities during the hey day of the 90s really had access to or were able to pull off. I feel lucky that I got to experience some of these bands and zines in Lubbock when I had the chance.

The book was great and well written but I feel like the execution of the theme was a bit of a mess and unfocused. Was it an academic take on feminism in the 90s or was it a tome on some of the bands in the original Riot Grrrl movement? There were a lot of ways that the book could have gone and I overall enthusiastically enjoyed the book but it fell a bit flat and the end of the book felt rushed. I did feel like the second half of the story went too far into the “this scene was dead when so-and-so decided blah-blah-blah” and became overly concerned with scene politics, shit talking, and erudite hipster-ism. Scene politics definitely play a role in any story but I don’t know if I really needed to know in great detail someone’s freak out on a minute-by-minute basis while they’re at a convention. The chaos of those events underlined that point clearly enough. I felt like the author also left out some really key bands in the scene like Tribe-8. If it wasn’t Heaven’s to Betsy, Bikini Kill, or Bratmobile, everything was sort of shrugged off. I didn’t even think Huggy Bear got much love in the book either and any mention of the bands that were formed out of the original movement were in the “Cast of Characters” section and that felt more like an after thought.

I’m glad that the book was written and I hope it inspires a whole new generation of women to get into politics, feminism, and music. I’ve always thought it was weird that there weren’t more women in the music scene. I think it’s getting better but I think there is a long way to go.

P.S. I still had an issue with some of the shit talk on Ian MacKaye. I had an issue with it back in the day and I still have an issue with it now. It’s Ian MacKaye. The dude is awesome.
