Urban Gothic, the new album from classically-trained producer Xander Harris, runs like a low-budget seventies slasher movie. From lead track “Opening Credits” to the brilliantly-titled “I Want More Than Just Blood,” its 13 cuts of noir-ish synthwave wouldn’t sound out of place on a cult Italo-horror flick by Dario Argento. Devised as a companion piece to the novel of the same name, it’s nevertheless a fine slice of brooding electro in its own right. Reminiscent of the Bladerunner soundtrack, it’s drenched in vintage retro-futurism. Deservedly ranked number 50 on FACT Magazine’s albums of the year list, it’s the sound of a 21st Century Vangelis at his most vibrant.
